Burnt End

Empangeni Bowling Club hosted the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls (KZNCB) Champion of Champions singles competition last weekend, with the Club Singles champions from clubs in the district competing for this coveted title.

Female section winners were Helga Rossouw (Harrismith), Noela Dreyer (Vryheid), Nan Roos (Dundee) and Fran Baleri (Klipbank BC, Ladysmith).

In the semi-finals, Helga accounted for Nan while Fran beat Noela to set up an interesting final.

In a close game which seesawed between the two players, Fran eventually got ahead to beat her opponent and end a very successful year for the young bowler.

In the men’s section there were some surprises, with many of the more experienced bowlers in participation not getting through to the playoffs.

Section winners were Billy Kruze (Eshowe), Dion Leaity (Richards Bay), Jeff Hunter (Empangeni) and Jacques Bierbaum (Dundee).

Jeff caused something of a surprise by beating Billy in his semi-final game, while Dion had to come from behind to beat Jacques.

In the final, Dion’s experience proved to be too much for Jeff, with Dion annexing the only singles title in the district that has eluded him.

All systems are go for the annual FedAuto Spring Business League, which is due to start early next month.

A total of 42 teams will again be competing in this enjoyable event.
