New Mayor to be voted in today?

The IFP is expected to retain the positions of Mayor and Speaker

Tension is rising today in Endumeni as hopes are high that the Council may finally get a new Mayor and Speaker and replace the two IFP Councillors who either resigned or whose membership from the party was terminated.

Endumeni has endured a rocky life since the August 2016 elections. Mayor Richard Mbatha resigned on October 25 although he announced his intention to quit to the Courier in September.

Speaker Mbatha’s IFP membership terminated

Endumeni has been in limbo ever since with the Executive Committee inoperable as there are only two members left – Councillors Mahaye and Bedassi.

The IFP last week terminated the membership of Speaker, Bongiwe Makhathini-Mbatha. Mr Mbatha is still facing charges of conspiracy to murder Ms Makhathini-Mbatha along with an Estcourt Councillor and an alleged hitman.

The IFP is expected to retain the posts of Mayor and Council Speaker.  However, there could be, in characteristic Endumeni style, disruptions when the Council meets at 9am today.
