Marking the 180th anniversary of the battle of Blood River
The programme starts on December 8
This year marks the 180th anniversary of the battle of Blood River – one of South Africa’s most iconic conflicts – the site of which is just a stone’s throw from Dundee.
The programme starts as early as December 8.
8 – 13 December:
Early bird campers start to laager on the terrain. Relax, explore the area, visit the museum and the laager of bronze wagons, play juksei, go horseriding, etc.
14 December:
Mounted commando departs De Jagersdrif en route to Blood river.
Mountain bike race.
Arrival of ox-wagon commemorative trek on the terrain.
Lantern walk to the laager, and sing-along at the wagons.
15 December:
Boeresport traditional games
Push bike race for the youngsters
Voortrekker demonstrations- candle – making, loper making (slugs used in muskets), musket shooting, etc.
Clay oxen competition
Target shooting
Sports with horses
Traditional dancing in the Centenary Hall (evening)
16 December:
06:00 Prayer meeting
09:00 Flag presentation by horse commando.
09:30 Wreath laying and Re-dedication of the Covenant.
10:00 Church service in Centenary Hall (Ds. F Visser (GHG Pietersburg)
11:00 Keynote address (Historical overview by Dr. LJ Bothma)
