Earlier today, the Department of Social Development (DSD) removed about 150 children from Môrester Children’s Home in Ladysmith.

At almost the same time, DSD removed an undisclosed number of children from Home Meah.

Department officials also attempted to remove children from Môrester Children’s Home in Newcastle.

However, DSD officials left the scene and stated they would return in the morning.

It is believed the reason for the removal of children relates to serious allegations made against Môrester (Ladysmith).

KZN Social Development spokesperson Ncumisa Ndelu told Ladysmith Gazette: “The department received very disturbing information, including allegations of abuse at Môrester Children’s Home [Ladysmith].”

It is unclear what compelled DSD to focus its attention on homes in the Newcastle area.

Representatives from Môrester (Newcastle) have since called on the community to help save the children, and urged residents to be at the home (situated on the Newcastle High School premises) from 7.30am tomorrow morning (February 16).

“The children have been protesting since early this afternoon. They do not want to go and they are very traumatised,” explained representatives of Môrester (Newcastle).
