As part of the 2019 Starsaver Campaign, volunteers from a national bank impressed on over 600 youngsters the importance of saving and banking (among other topics) in order to secure their future financial success.
“One of the key aims of our lessons is to instill the discipline of putting money aside no matter how small the amount. “To achieve this, we use real life examples of saving just a small amount and then demonstrate how this can grow over a period of time. Our message is simple: starting small makes it easier to increase your savings as you grow-up and money becomes more available. This is the first step in the journey to a better life,” said Sitandiwe Dimba, Ithala Group Reputation Management Manager.
Grade 12 learners Sanele Mchunu and Ntabiseng Msiya learned the lesson that every penny counts.
“I learnt that I should not wait until I am grown up to start saving, that even the money my parents give me can be saved. It has helped with my perspective on life; that from today I now know my current situation does not determine the rest of my life; my background does not have to be my future. I will be using the information to help me out and have a positive effect on my life,” said Sanele Mchunu.
Ntabiseng Msiya who has a little business selling snacks and airtime said:
“I didn’t know that saving starts small, no matter how small, and that every R1 makes a difference. “I didn’t even know that I can have a bank account as child and use it to save money.”
“I am a seller, but I sell and I do not see my profits. The information we got today will help me to separate my money and help with savings. We are impoverished so by saving I can buy things that I need like school books and supplies,” she said.
Grade eight learners said their take-outs from the lessons were how to save money; that their savings could contribute to buying school uniform and supplies each year or even a house one day; how to mark-up prices; what a bank account is and the importance of staying out of debt.
