On Saturday, Sarel Cilliers took on Newcastle High School at the Lions Den in Glencoe.
Rugby: It was an action-packed day for the rugby boys, with Sarel Lions facing Newcastle Tigers in the ‘Battle of the Jungle”. All the teams played hard, clean and constructive rugby, although it was Sarel which tamed the tigers. The final scores were as follows: u-14 75 – 0; u-15 41 – 0; u-16 24 – 14, second team 57 – 5; first team 73 – 6.
Netball: The u-15A Newcastle team was the better of the day, winning 21 – 11. The u-14A team played an outstanding game, with the score 13-all until the last minute of the game. Newcastle managed to score, taking the final score to 14 – 13. The u-14Bs also played an extraordinary game, winning game 10 – 2.
Hockey: The first team hockey girls played an exhilarating game, giving their all against NHS. Despite the team’s best efforts however, the match ended in a 1-all draw. The u-16 cubs were prepped for the game and were determined to stick to the game plan. Just shy of 8 minutes into the game, Yamkela Magwaza put her team on the scoreboard. The girls then pulled and weaved their way, allowing Yamkela to score her second goal. With the clock ticking, another of Sarel’s cubs, Kaylin Swanepoel pulled the team 3 – 0 ahead. In the second half, the cubs played a solid game, with Kaylin scoring again during a short corner. The final score was 4 – 0 to Sarel.
The junior hockey boys team played its first game against Ferrum High School the previous weekend, winning 2 – 1. It was determined to prove itself again and drew 1 – 1. The first team hockey boys prepared for battle, fighting to keep up a winning streak. Through a love of the game and some stunning skills, the team also drew its match 1 – 1.
Chess: Sarel’s chess team showed great team spirit against NHS. I Jaji won his game, while Z Buthelezi, S Rajkumar and L Nyembe drew their games.
