June 16 marks a special day on the South African calendar, as it commemorates the day the Soweto Uprising took place in 1976.

It is celebrated every year in order to recognise the role of the youth in the liberation of South Africa from the apartheid regime and in memory of all the young people who lost their lives during the protest.

Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality holds the belief that government institutions must lead society by creating an enabling environment for youth development through implementing programmes specifically for youth development and incentivising private sector participation in youth skills development.

On July 4 (today), the municipality will be hosting a Youth Day commemoration and skills development programme at the Wembezi Multipurpose Hall. Young people from different wards are invited to attend this event.

The purpose is to support and promote skills development, as well as highlight opportunities to community members, enhance youth involvement and active citizenry by building the capacity of youth organisations, and groom leaders to become agents in their own development in order to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

It also aims to make education and skills development fashionable to society, and the youth in particular. Young women in general and out-of-school youth will be exposed to work experience, social cohesion, leadership development, and personal transformation.
