Cable theft results is electricity outage in CBD

Certain areas in the central business district will be without electricity for most of the day

Unsuspecting staff from the municipality’s electricity department responded to a report of an electricity outage this morning.

They knew it was probably the problem they attended to the previous afternoon at the substation located at the corner of Phillip and Alfred streets.

When staff arrived, they were dismayed to find that suspected cable thieves had started a fire outside the substation, which caused damage to the cables, resulting in today’s outage.

Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Electricity Planning Manager Cyril Moodley said that staff were busy replacing the burnt out cables this morning.

He added that some areas in Alfred, Phillip and Alexandra streets would be without electricity for most of the day.

“If your electricity in these areas is not off then you are not affected,” he added.
