The announcement of this award was met with lots of confusion

After a photo of a certificate presented to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality was posted on social media, a barrage of sarcasm and questions from locals followed.

A common reaction from most residents was: “Is this a joke?” with many listing the service delivery concerns that continue to plague Estcourt and surrounding areas.

The local municipality was awarded Best Performing Local Municipality in the category ‘Back 2 Basic Project’ and was presented by the Chartered Institute of Government Finance Audit and Risk Officers (Cigfar).

The Estcourt News has contacted the municipality to clarify the rules and criteria of the competition as well as the if a physical inspection was done ahead of judging. Unfortunately, these questions could not be answered in time for this week’s paper.

A response from the communication office advised that Mayor Jabulile Mbele was not available on Monday and Tuesday and would be explaining “everything about the certificate” at a council meeting on July 17. Howver, the Special Council Meeting was postponed.
