Sarel Cilliers High School learners have had everything they touch, turn to gold. In the past week, they have participated in many tournaments and activities on the sport and academic field.
Monday: The matrics are working long hours and have extra classes every afternoon of the week and Saturday mornings, to prepare for their final stretch in their school career. The rest of the school is doing its bit very successfully on the sporting and academic sides.
Tuesday: The under-15 cricket team played against Newcastle High School. In its 20 overs, NHS made 89 all out, which Sarel Cilliers chased down with 11 overs and 7 wickets in hand. The team also sported new shirts, sponsored by Yahyaa’s Transport.
Wednesday: The 1st cricket team traveled to Vryheid High School, which produced a nail-biter of a match. Sarel made 200 for three in its new kit, sponsored by The Courier Guy. Vryheid came close with a final score of 192 for 8, which meant Sarel won the close encounter by only 8 runs.
Thursday: The soccer boys and girls played Vryheid Landbou High School away and also had a successful afternoon with the following scores: senior boys won 2-1, the junior boys won 4-0 and the girls drew 3-3.
Friday: The soccer girls continued with 2nd round fixtures in the Ayoba Schools Women’s Football League. The following scores were recorded: Sarel one drew 0-0 against Sebenzakusakhanya Secondary School and won 2-1 against Thalana High School.
A few of the u-15 cricket boys went to St Dominic’s Newcastle for the Northern KwaZulu-Natal trials. Congratulations to Zaheer Chenia and Jarren Theron, on their selection for the next round.
Saturday: For the 1st time in years, Sarel’s tennis players had the opportunity to play matches at home. They played against NHS and had a successful day on the court, winning 15 games to 4. They were congratulated by the school and were said to have looked ‘very professional’ in their new kit, thanks to sponsorship from The Courier Guy. u-18 soccer boys also attended NKZN trials at NHS.
The rugby 7s teams (u-15 and u-17) went to Vryheid High to participated in ‘The Kings of the North 7s Tournament’. The Blue Lions had an amazing time and won the tournament in both age groups. After a long day, which included group matches and semi-finals, they ended up playing VHS in both finals.
The u-15s had a tough and close encounter, but with the ‘Never Surrender’ attitude to draw on, the team won 10 – 7. The u-17s then surprised VHS with a excellent performance, beating the team convincingly by 43 points to 7.
Grade 9 Information Evening – The Grade 9 Subject Information Evening took place on Thursday (August 1). Over 100 parents attended the event as well as some Grade 9 learners. Hopefully, all the learners will now be able to make informed choices regarding subject choices and their futures.
Gymkhana – Zander Steyn and Liezel Viljoen took part in Vryheid Landbou Club’s annual gymkhana event. Zander won the prize for Best Man at Arms, which is awarded for the highest points scored, and Liezel scored 81. Next up is the KZN Championships in Newcastle on August 24.
