District municipality confirms theft of municipal vehicle

uThukela District Municipality’s Deputy Mayor, Nombali Mchunu is in hot water for allegedly abusing municipal assets.

There have been calls for a thorough investigation into her conduct; amid claims she travelled to Johannesburg in a municipal Toyota Fortuner in July, without permission, to attend a soccer match in her personal capacity.
The vehicle was then stolen outside a Sandton hotel.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Sipho Hlomuka has since called on the Speaker of uThukela District Council Phindile Strydom to launch an investigation into the matter.
“This is a serious allegation that must be investigated with urgency, and pending such an investigation, we will not be jumping to any conclusions. We have asked the Speaker to investigate this matter speedily and submit a report to CoGTA,” said MEC Hlomuka.
“There are too many questions in this particular case that can only be answered satisfactorily in an investigation. This is why we have asked the Speaker of uThukela to conduct such an investigation and report to the department.”
Communication Manager for uThukela District Municipality, Jabulani Mkhonza confirmed the theft of the municipal vehicle and attempted to explain the events of that fateful day.
“The Deputy Mayor had gone to Johannesburg, utilising the municipal vehicle assigned to her. She proceeded to check in at a hotel. When the Deputy Mayor came over to fetch her belongings that were kept inside the vehicle in question, it was discovered the vehicle had gone missing from the hotel parking area.”
He added a case of theft had been opened, with the matter reported to both the administrative and political leadership of the district municipality.
