Police have launched a desperate search for an awaiting trial prisoner who escaped from a police van yesterday.

The man, along with another prisoner, was being transported from Babanango Police Station to Ncome Prison when he escaped.

It is believed that he used a hacksaw blade to help free himself from the handcuffs and the van.

The other awaiting trial prisoner alerted officers to the escape, however, the man had already exited the vehicle and had made a run for it by the time police became aware.

The escapee was arrested for a rape case in Babanango and for another rape in Nondweni.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact them on 035 835 0003.
