Endumeni’s crumbling road network has prompted the circulation of a petition, which residents hope will persuade the municipality to upgrade the network of roads and pavements.

Councillor, Anthon Raubenheimer, who started the petition about two months ago, said there were already over 400 signatures accumulated.

“The plan is to glean over 500 signatures and present the petition at a Council meeting on December 4. I have been overwhelmed by the number of complaints over the condition of roads, especially in the industrial area, central business district and in Glencoe.”

The state of roads in the Avon Industrial area has been a thorny issue for some months. Rob Burns of RABCO said drivers of superlink trucks delivering reels of paper to his printing plant had to negotiate huge potholes on Brewery and Cable Roads.

“When it rains, the holes fill with water, making these roads even more dangerous, as one cannot fathom the depth of the hole.”

These sentiments were echoed by Philip Ceronio, whose business on Avon Road has also had to cope with an almost non-existent road infrastructure.

Previous comments on the situation by the Technical Services Department revealed an order of no less than 40 tons of hot mix was needed, before material could be ordered and delivered.

An update on the situation was not forthcoming at the time of going to press, but a municipal official acknowledged receiving the query and indicated a response would be ‘issued soon’.
