Holding candles and braving light rain, a large crowd of mourners gathered at the Commercial Road Bridge on Thursday evening to pay tribute to Hope Jodie Fourie.

The 13-year-old was stabbed to death on Saturday night while walking adjacent to the bridge with a male friend. It is alleged three men attacked the pair and tried to rob them, and Jodie was reportedly stabbed in the head and chest.

SAPS later arrested a 15-year-old in connection with the stabbing. An official investigation is still ongoing.

Those at the vigil have called for justice for Jodie. Her parents were also there – it was incorrectly stated in previous reports that Jodie had no parents.

“What is correct is that Jodie’s parents do not have an income, but we are grateful to all those who supported the family during this time of grief,” said one of the mourners.

Balloons were also released and hymns sung, as mourners gathered around the wooden cross placed at the spot where Jodie died. Her funeral will be held on Saturday.
