Senior Citizens Club busy all year round

The Estcourt Senior Citizens Club take pride in entertaining and educating the elderly

The Estcourt Senior Citizens Club hosts weekly meetings on Wednesdays at the Forderville Primary School Hall from
12pm. Each week, there are various speakers and activities to keep the members busy.

Here is a recap from 2019:
July – Reena Bhagwandeen spoke about money matters and budgeting.

August 21 – Counsellor Nadia Buckus gave an informative talk on depression, finances, as well as loss of a loved one. It was well-received by members, some of whom shared their painful experiences of losing a child or living alone.

August 25 – Some members and visitors attended the annual high tea in Ladysmith after receiving an invite from the senior citizens. It was enjoyed. Mrs Peerbhay was also invited to give a talk.

August 28 – Local attorney Dirk Vercuil, assisted by Samuel Liebenberg, spoke about wills and estates and concluded with a song, ‘Love Lift Us Up’, sang by Mr Vercuil. Members appreciated this live entertainment.

August 30 – Physiotherapist Sulochana Naidoo and staff from the Rehabilitation Department at Estcourt Hospital spoke on Alzheimer’s and dementia.

September 4 – Ruby Naidoo read a message on elders and aging, ailments,preparing for old age homes, as well as frail care.

September – Halima Ghasitha initiated a craft session and encouraged members to create a vision board, including pictures of health, holidays and family. She displayed some made by her children. Pastor Pramesh gave an inspirational talk that made the elderly feel special.

September – Lyn Shaw introduced a new idea to bring and share plants or seeds, which worked very well with members.

October 16 and 23 – A breast cancer awareness talk was delivered by two survivors. Being positive and treatments
were discussed. International Month for Older Persons was observed. Mrs Peerbhay co-ordinated a pick-a-box show with gifts, lucky draws and a little gift for each member.

November 2 – The dinner and dance was a very successful fund-raiser. It was thoroughly enjoyed by members and the community. Thank you to everyone who supported it and made it a success.

November 20 – Diabetes Month was observed. Screenings were done by staff from Medical Hall. A few high readings were found and Mrs Peerbhay stressed the importance of good nutrition, deep breathing, reduced salt intake and doctor visits.

November 21 – Kidney function screenings were held at the George Memorial Clinic. It was successful, with
only two referrals to specialists.

November 27 – The usual end-of-year outing to Wagendrift Dam was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The club would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to all who have sponsored, assisted or contributed in any way.
