[WATCH] Municipality breaks ground on new home for Hadebe family

Work on the foundation of the family's new home is expected to begin early next week.

Against a backdrop of natural beauty, the Hadebe family lives in abject poverty on a ramshackle property along the D96.

This past Youth Day, Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba identified the 18-member household of mostly children and intervened by ‘adopting’ the family.

Apart from providing essential groceries and warm clothes to the family, and in what has been described as one of the Mayor’s ‘biggest humanitarian projects ever done’, the municipality has today (June 25) broken ground to build a new home for the struggling family.

Construction work is expected to begin tomorrow (June 26) and officials believe the foundation will be poured early next week.
