DUNDEE KZN: Local bowlers narrowly miss out on Zone Mixed Pairs honours

The Club Handicap Singles will be played on February 27 and 28

The Northern Zone Mixed Pairs Competition was hosted by Dundee Bowling Club this past weekend. A total of 26 teams entered from around the Zone, including Piet Retief and Volksrust. Once again, the playing conditions were very humid, with rain also disrupting play on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

After the Saturday rounds, the play-off spots for Sunday were determined. Well done to Greg and Jo-Ann, who made it through to the play-offs; the only Dundee team to do so. Unfortunately, they succumbed to John Douthwaite and Michelle Steele from Newcastle.

Other teams through to the play-offs were John Cross and Ros Mostert from Vryheid, Alice and Ron Howe from Newcastle, Phillip Scheepers and Cornel van Wyk from Vryheid, and Trevor Moore and Denise Phillips from Newcastle. Once the play-offs were completed, it was an all-Newcastle final to be played, with Alice and Ron up against John and Michelle.

The rain held off just long enough for 10 of the 15 ends to be completed, constituting a game. John and Michelle won the game by 13 points to three to clinch the title of Northern Zone Mixed Pairs Champions. Congratulations to the winners and runners-up, and a big thank you to all those who participated in successfully hosting yet another tournament.

Correspondence has been received from Bowls South Africa that the Inter-Districts Tournament and Junior Inter-District Tournament have been cancelled for 2021. The Club Handicap Singles will be played on February 27 and 28, and Vryheid Bowling Club will be hosting an Autumn Day on March 6.
