For the second time in three days Eddie van der Walt and his staff from Enrac Refrigeration on Beaconsfield Street  were prevented from accessing their business premises this morning due to a trench dug by contractors installing fibre optic cabling.

Eddie said he faced a similar situation on Monday morning even though he had asked the contractors to endeavour to complete the work over the weekend.

“After contacting the Courier and making calls on Monday morning workers did come and fill the trench. But they had not put in the cabling. So this morning we arrive at around 7.30am and find we cannot drive in or drive out our vehicles out to see customers. because of this trench.

This is really poor and impacts on small businesses in Dundee that are already struggling,” a visibly upset Eddie said.

More calls were made to the contractor, Britelink,  who said they would attend to the open trench. The trench digging has caused huge upheaval in Endumeni with the work causing burst water pipes and damage to electrical cabling.

Britelink’s Bruce Wright has said that sub contractors employed to complete the digging are responsible for paying for any damages caused.

What could be concerning news for the town in terms of upheaval is that another contractor, Herotel, is about to move in and install a number of communication towers that may also impact on the town’s infrastructure. Herotel has not yet responded to requests for comment.
