DUNDEE KZN: ATM scams reach a new peak

"Do not be distracted. The minute you feel uncomfortable, call security or cancel your transaction and walk away."

ATM scammers had a busy weekend, with three incidents reported in Dundee and Glencoe. Scammers tricked a man out of R2500 at the ABSA ATM at the Glencoe Centre at about 11am on Saturday.

Menelaou of Glencoe Spar said it appeared as if five men had been part of the group of scammers that had preyed on the victim. On Sunday, another person was left out of pocket to the tune of R2500 after being approached by at least two men.

It appears that they later got into a Vryheid registered car. Mr Menelaou said that from what he had seen from the footage, it appeared as if the men had shown great sleight of hand or perhaps had a hand-held device with which they used to clone the victims’ cards. “In both cases, the scammers were right next to the victim. I urge anyone using an ATM to ensure that there is a distance of at least three metres between themselves and the next person.

Do not be distracted. The minute you feel uncomfortable, call security or cancel your transaction and walk away.” On Saturday at the Boulevard Centre, Dundee, a victim was conned out of R2500 at the ABSA ATM and on Sunday an elderly person was swindled out of around R2000 in similar circumstances at the Standard Bank ATM.
