VRYHEID KZN: ‘DotKom’ back with the Morning Drive on ACR

Sicelo Malinga, better known by his stage name ‘DotKom’, is a local radio host at Abaqulusi Community Radio (ACR) Station (90.7fm). DotKom won over his loyal listeners’ hearts with his personable voice and infectious banter in the mornings. A few months back, Abaqulusi Community Radio took a break due to renovations that were being done at the station. After the re-development, a reshuffle of presenters took place and DotKom was given a slot on the ‘Afternoon Drive’ show from 3pm to 6pm. “I moved from the Morning Drive to the Afternoon Drive because an improvement in the content had to be seen, so I mainly did the pm slot to improve the show.” However, social media plays a vital role in everything and such is DotKom’s popularity that many people were not happy in the slightest with the move, lodging complaints and asking questions on various social media platforms. The fans were used to hearing his voice in the mornings and the reshuffle did not sit well with lots of listeners. It is alleged that the management team took heed and took action; they decided to take DotKom back to his old position and run with the Morning Drive once again. On April 8, DotKom was back to broadcasting in the mornings with his show called ‘Your Classic Morning Drive and the Crew’, which one can catch every weekday from 6am to 9am. DotKom mentioned that morning shows are meant to be led by people who are ‘vibey’ and will give a fresh start to people’s day. “I am 100% happy to do the morning show again, since it is the first show I did when I joined the team at ACR. The most important thing radio requires is to educate and entertain, but mainly I am here to educate my community; that is why I have various topics (real life experiences topics) that we chat about with different guests who have expertise in that particular subject. I pick guests who are local and people who know exactly what’s happening where we live; someone who will relate with the listeners and the listeners will relate to him or her.” DotKom also shared that he mainly plays Afro Pop, Golden Oldies and House Music. “I play music that will motivate people to start their day in a positive frame of mind so they are able to face the day head on. I play beautiful music.” His listeners have once again showed love on social media at how thrilled and excited they are to hear him in the mornings. DotKom concluded by saying, “I love all the people who support and believe in my craft.
