VRYHEID KZN: Goqo Primary School commemorates International Biodiversity Day

Natural Science teacher Miss NP Zwane extended a vote of thanks and promised to involve the entire school in biodiversity

Last week Tuesday, Goqo Primary School invited the Department of Environmental Affairs based at AbaQulusi Local Municipality to commemorate International Biodiversity Day. The members arrived as a team, led by Mr Philani Nxumalo, and they gave a presentation to the Grade 7 learners. Their main focus was to educate the learners on the 2021 Biodiversity slogan, which is: ‘We are part of the solution’. This is a reminder that biodiversity is an answer to South African challenges like the outbreak of Covid-19, which has forced us to reconsider the protective role that biodiversity plays in protecting us from contracting infectious diseases. The team also emphasised the importance of biodiversity conservation.

The learners were then encouraged to save the planet’s valuable resources, such as water, and also reduce the amount of refuse by implementing the Waste Hierarchy, which is ‘Reduce, Re-use and Recycle’. Miss Mbali Luthuli from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs mentioned that the other challenge facing South Africa is poor socio-economic conditions and biodiversity, which is the strategy that drives economic growth (more especially tourism) and generates income / biodiversity-related job opportunities. Learners then helped to plant trees. Natural Science teacher Miss NP Zwane extended a vote of thanks and promised to involve the entire school in biodiversity.
