A fun run was held on Youth Day at eMondlo, in the area of Mvunyane (Ward 14), called the Mangosuthu Ward 14 Comrades Marathon.

People from all over celebrated Youth Day last week Wednesday (June 16), especially young people. A fun run was held on Youth Day at eMondlo, in the area of Mvunyane (Ward 14), called the Mangosuthu Ward 14 Comrades Marathon. This is the second time this race has taken place, the first time being back in 2019. Last year it could not be held because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lindokuhle Ngema, who is a coach and founder of the Lindokuhle Athletic Club, said the race was open for everyone in the community. The fun run started at eMvunyane Esimashiwini and ended at Ellos New Town. He also mentioned that when the event took place in 2019, his club was there and they took all the prizes.

This year, they dominated the race as well. Trophies, medals, kettles and sandwich toasters were up for grabs. 10km, 5km and 2.5km races were run on the day. In the men’s 10km category, Bongani Msimango took first prize, followed by Lindokuhle Ngema and Sbusiso Ntombela. The women’s 10km race was won by Simpiwe Mchunu, a matric student at Khondlo Secondary School. In the 5km race, first position was claimed by Sphamandla Dlamini, with Siyabonga Mngadi in second place.

The 5km females’ race was won by Monalisa Mchunu, while Fanelesibonge Nkosi took second and Thandolwethu Madonsela third. All of them are members of the Lindokuhle Athletic Club. Two people from Pongola won the 2.5km race (joint first place). There were also prizes for Mr and Miss Personality. Lindokuhle would like to thank Mr Mathebula, a local businessman who assisted them with transportation to the venue.
