VRYHEID KZN: Ambitious but in need of a wheelchair to get around

Sbongakonke Londiwe Zulu is a physically disabled young woman who doesn’t use her disability as an excuse for anything. That said though, she needs better mobility in the form of a motorised wheelchair. Sbongakonke was born and bred in Louwsberg, but she currently resides in Vryheid, in the area of Lakeside.

She was born with a physically disability that greatly restricts her freedom of movement. However, she says that with the help of her family, she has been able to beat all the odds in her life journey, as she has studied and obtained a diploma. “When I grew up, no one thought I could achieve anything in life, based on the nature of my disability. I am totally dependent on others for my own movements, but I am mentally sound,” she says. She goes on to say that, “My determination to achieve success allowed me to enroll in a learnership, which afforded me a placement with AbaQulusi Local Municipality.” She explains that the reason she shares her story with the public is because she needs assistance to get a new electrical wheelchair for her to have better mobility. “I am a person who is very ambitious and I do not use my disability as an excuse, I have saved an amount of R8000 from my disability grant towards the purchase of an electrical wheelchair.”
