NEWCASTLE KZN: District’s mayors turn to the media in the fight against Covid-19
The Amajuba District is currently one of the slowest when it comes to Covid-19 vaccinations.
Mayors of municipalities in the district are calling on residents to be vaccinated against Covid-19.
At a press briefing yesterday morning (September 27) at the Amajuba District Council chambers, mayors from the district, Newcastle, Dannhauser, and Emadlangeni (Utrecht) requested the assistance of the media in alerting more residents to the importance of being vaccinated amid the pandemic.
“The Amajuba District is one of the slowest districts at the moment when it comes to vaccinations. Our community members appear to be afraid to be vaccinated, especially those between ages 18 and 35. This is posing a serious threat, as it risks more people being affected by the virus and also means there will be a halt in our economic recovery,” commented the Amajuba District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane.
Cllr Ngubane added that a closer relationship needed to be built between media houses and local government, in order for more people to be reached with critical information on the vaccination process and guide them to be vaccinated.
“We will be many voices, but we will carry over the same message,” he said. “We need to get the message across to our community that the vaccine is safe and absolutely necessary if we want to return to life as normal.”
