Ladysmith KZN: Premier launches planting season

We must use the land we have in KZN, productively - Premier Zikalala

Today (September 29), KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala launched the Multi-Planting Season Programme in Zwelisha, under uThukela District Municipality. The aim of the programme is to encourage communities to plant in the soil in an effort to foster food security.

“The spring season has arrived, so we wish to emphasise that it is now time for us to plant. Planting is part of the economy; we must use the land we have in the province, productively. Some of the people who started as small-scale subsistence farmers are today commercial farmers, and some of them even supply the government market.”

Premier Zikalala added that people should not be discouraged by the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in many of them losing so much because they couldn’t go out and sell.

The premier was accompanied by Agriculture & Rural Development MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi; Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs MEC Ravi Pillay; Public Works & Human Settlements MEC Ntuthuko Sibiya; district and local mayors; as well as KZN Director-General Dr Mkhize.
