Newcastle SAPS warns stokvel groups to be cautious.

According to Lizzy Arumugam of the Corporate Communications unit, stokvel groups are keen to spend their hard-earned money this festive season.

“However, this makes them ideal prey for rash crooks eager for a quick buck.”

Arumugam advised stokvel groups to avoid carrying large amounts of cash as a precaution.

Following the guidelines below will help these groups protect themselves and lessen their chances of becoming victims:

“Avoid making cash deposits of club members’ contributions on high-risk days such as the Monday after month end.”

• Ensure that anyone depositing or withdrawing club cash is accompanied by another club member.

“Instead of collecting monetary donations, a stokvel savings club or burial society might arrange for members to deposit cash immediately into the club’s account.”

• Make arrangements for the club’s payout to be electronically paid into each club member’s personal account, or accounts of their choice.

“When going to deposit club cash contributions, bring another person with you,” Arumugam concluded.
