With the holidays upon us, it’s time to gear up and stay safe…

Keep these tips in mind while travelling out on the roads:

Check your car:

Check your vehicle before departing to make sure it is roadworthy.

Bodywork: The body of the vehicle must be rust-free and without any damage.

Doors and handles: The doors should open and close without an issue from the inside and outside, and must be firmly attached at the hinges. Inner panels must be in a good condition.

Windows and windscreen: There must be no cracks in the windscreen. All windows should be able to close and open. Your vehicle should be fitted with a fully functioning windshield wiper.

Lights and indicators: They all must be working correctly and securely fitted.

Wheels and tyres: The tread must be at least 1.6mm deep, must not be smooth or worn, and must be the correct size.

The brakes must be working, shock absorbers must not be worn out, exhaust mountings must be secure, and the engine compartment must be clean with no leaks and no loose or visible wiring.

Respect the speed limits:

There are many signs along the country’s roads that indicate the speed at which you should be travelling. You should stick to the speed limit, as it is not only for your safety, but also the safety of fellow road users. Do not try any risky manoeuvres such as racing or speeding; it’s not worth losing your life.

Keep a safe following distance:

This is the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. The average following distance is three seconds, but is usually defined by being able to stop without swerving or bumping into other vehicles. Remember to increase this distance when visibility is low or road conditions are not ideal.

Avoid driving in peak-hour traffic:

This way, you will avoid heavy traffic and not feel pressured to get to your destination quicker, and you will not be pressed for time. Prepare alternative routes, as you never know what may occur while you are travelling. It is always better to have a backup plan.
