DUNDEE KZN: Festive soccer success for Dundee United
"The aim of this tournament is to provide a small profit made by Maphise Holdings to give back to the community that has supported them over the years, in an effort to bring back this great sport," said Bongani.
There was excitement galore as soccer enthusiasts filled the Mpumelelo Stadium in Sibongile to watch the three-day Maphise Tournament over the festive season.
The Maphise Cup Tournament was launched in December 2019 with five teams. Last year, it was played from December 25 to 27 and there were 19 teams taking part. It’s called the Maphise Cup due to Bongani Mlambo’s company called Maphise Holdings. The tournament was Bongani’s dream as a Dundee-born teenager in Sibongile, when he realised the importance of giving back to young people. This stemmed from the lack of interest being shown in the sport and he also grew up in a home where his biological father loved football.
“In our community, we grew up with all the sports imaginable. “The youth were not short of something to do.
“The aim of this tournament is to provide a small profit made by Maphise Holdings to give back to the community that has supported them over the years, in an effort to bring back this great sport,” said Bongani.
“I would like to thank all the teams and all those who have contributed to making this game so successful and exciting. We hope to get more sponsors in the coming years and to host more sports like netball, etc,” he added.
The winners were Dundee United, who won a cow, soccer kit, and gold medals.
The runners-up, Multiple Professionals, won a sheep, soccer kit, and medals.
