KZN MEC for CoGTA addresses Newcastle Council
MEC Hlomuka is expected to hold a press briefing today.
The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) in KwaZulu-Natal, Sipho Hlomuka was in Newcastle yesterday to address members of both the local council and executive committee (Exco).
According to national reports, this formed part of MEC Hlomuka’s direct engagements with mayors, speakers and Exco members from municipalities across the province.
According to a reliable source, the former acting Municipal Manager, Vish Govender gave a presentation and placed on record the state of Newcastle’s finances during the meeting.
Govender was removed from the acting MM’s post in a meeting held on January 26.

A letter, dated January 26 and seen by the Newcastle Advertiser, shows a decision made by a new acting Municipal Manager, who has allegedly already been appointed.
The letter calls for the ‘immediate upliftment of suspension, withdrawal of charges and cancellation of disciplinary hearing’ of a municipal official who was suspended by Govender recently.
Sources have questioned both the alleged upliftment of suspension and the ‘appointment’ of a new acting Municipal Manager, apparently without following proper procedure.
MEC Hlomuka is expected to hold a press briefing today (January 28).
