Learners take part in athletics

Harpo Primary School held an athletics meeting for their Foundation Phase grades recently. The athletics took place on the school playgrounds, with different teams vying for top honours. The children were divided into four groups, being the Lions, Springboks, Tigers and Cheetahs. The teams were represented by different colours – the lions were red, springboks wearing blue, tigers in green, and cheetahs in yellow. Different events like spoon and egg, sack race, 80m and 200m sprints, and relays took place on the day, with children aged six to 10 years old taking part. The top performing athletes on the day were: 6-7 years – Enhle Mthethwa (girl) from the red team; Ntando Dlamini (boy) from the blue team; under 7-8 years – Babalwa Mthembu (girl) from the yellow team; and Asande Masuku (boy) from the red team; 8-9 years – Amanda Mdluli (girl) and Lwazi Dladla (boy) both from the yellow team; under 10 years – Phumele Mnyeni (girl) and Wandile Sibiya (boy) from the green team. Organiser Miss Sithole thanked Mr Mhlungu and Mr Khubeka for assisting in the planning, and also the Vryheid Herald and ambulance services for availing themselves that day. “It was really a fun day for the lower grades.
