Ward 3 committee hosts first annual sports day –
The community of Fernwood was in for a real treat on Youth Day (June 16), when Ward 3 Councillor, Connie Hariram and her team hosted the Ward 3 Sports Day at the Fernwood Grounds.
More than 20 soccer teams from Newcastle and surrounding areas eagerly signed up to compete in the open division tournament.
Two netball teams, as well as a women’s soccer team, also completed at the sports day with the intention of proving that sports are no longer the sole domain of men.
This was a first for the Fernwood community,” commented Cllr Hariram. “Teams from all walks of life participated. We had market stalls, SAPS and ER24, and Mediclinic Newcastle nurses who checked people’s vitals and gave Covid-19 vaccinations.”
