SANBS reaches out to community donors

The campaign aims to make blood donation easier and dispel the myth that organising a blood drive is time-consuming.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has launched the ‘Good Hood’ campaign recently, to increase blood donation and reach donors in their respective communities.

The Good Hood campaign aims to bring community-minded individuals together at their residential complex or estate, to conveniently make their donation of life-saving blood.

SANBS believes that just a bit of time and space can make a huge impact.

The launch of the Good Hood campaign comes at a time when people are staying at home to avoid becoming infected with COVID-19 while donating blood, ” said Nomthandazo Mosupye, Senior Manager of Marketing and Communication for the blood service.

She added that fear of needles and a lack of access to donor centres were two common reasons given for not giving blood. Through the Good Hood campaign, SANBS hopes address the issue of people’s unwillingness to travel to make a blood donation.

Through the campaign, SANBS also offers opportunities to those who have always wanted to get involved in community service.

The campaign aims to not only make blood donation easier, but also to dispel the myth that organising a blood drive is time-consuming and requires extensive management and planning.”

The campaign is based on the idea of bringing communities together to help blood recipients who live in their neighbourhoods. To recognise each participating community’s generosity and selflessness, SANBS aims to recognise and celebrate each neighbourhood as a ‘Good Hood’.

Being designated a Good Hood will demonstrate to others that blood donation does not have to be an individual activity; it can also become a community and family activity.”
