A year on and still no bridge for Manzana
Residents of the small community remain effectively cut off from neighbouring areas.
The promised ‘bridge over troubled waters’ has yet to materialise in Manzana, a small community outside of Newcastle.
Residents are forced to cross a river daily to reach any neighbouring areas, and to reach shops, schools and places of work. In periods of heavy rain, this becomes a life-threatening task.
As reported by the Newcastle Advertiser in 2021, the Newcastle Municipality met with the Manzana community and promised that construction on the bridge would begin.
Residents say that beyond the laying of foundations, that is where promises ended.
At a recent service delivery themed event, Mayor of Newcastle, Xolani Dube provided an explanation for the delays and gave further assurances to Manzana residents.
