The rain has brought welcome relief to many parts of the country and showers are expected to continue into the weekend.
This will cause many people to stay at home and avoid the inclement weather, but it should not deter you from donating blood.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is encouraging Group O and B donors to donate blood at their local donor centre to help replenish declining blood stocks.
“The rain provides welcome relief from the heat of recent weeks, but its persistence could jeopardise our operations, resulting in low collections. This means that we will be unable to meet the daily minimum of 3 500 units collected,” Thandi Mosupye, SANBS Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications, explained.
Rainy weather frequently causes the cancellation of mobile blood drives, which account for the vast majority of blood units collected each day.
SANBS is requesting that donors who are due for donation take some time out of their day to give the gift of life.
“We need your assistance to stabilize our stock levels, especially as we approach the holiday season,” Mosupye added.
She suggested that donors donate even during load shedding because all SANBS donor centres are electrified during blackouts.
SANBS launched the Change a Life campaign on Tuesday, November 8, to educate donors about platelet donation.
“Platelet donors are critical in assisting us in providing much-needed products for the treatment of patients with blood disorders, cancer, and organ transplant recipients. Cancer patients are highly reliant on regular platelet donations as part of their recovery,” Mosupye concluded.
SANBS has been able to complete the monumental task of collecting blood to meet South Africa’s needs thanks to the generosity of donors.
