Convicted rapist receives double life sentences
The suspect denied the rapes, claiming that, while he was in a relationship with both women, he did not have sexual intercourse with them.
The Madadeni Regional Court sentenced a 33-year-old man to double life imprisonment for rapes he committed in the Osizweni area from April 2017 and September 2018.
According to Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, NPA spokesperson, in the first incident, the man approached a passing 17-year-old girl.
“He brought her home and raped her twice before falling asleep. She was then able to call her boyfriend, who arrived at the scene with the police, and the accused was arrested,” she said.
However, he absconded and a warrant of arrest was issued.
In September 2018 the man contacted a 21-year-old woman after they had exchanged phone numbers. He took a taxi to her house and then transported her to his house.
“Despite her request to return home, he ignored her and raped her three times before falling asleep.”
Ramkisson-Kara further explained that while he (the suspect) was sleeping, the woman called her family from her cellphone, and they arrived with the police, who arrested him.
The suspect denied the rapes, claiming that, while he was in a relationship with both women, he did not have sexual intercourse with them on the day of the offenses.
The state, as represented by Regional Court Prosecutor Bonginkosi Don Motha, produced overwhelming DNA evidence against the accused. Motha also presided over the testimonies of the complainants, their boyfriends, family members, and the doctors who cared for them after their trauma.
“One complainant stated in her testimony that it was terrible to have to call your boyfriend to come and get you after being raped. The man’s actions, according to the other victim, violated her.”
As a result, the man was successfully convicted.
He was declared ineligible to possess a firearm and the court ordered that his name be added to the National Register of Sexual Offenders.
“This successful prosecution is welcomed by the National Prosecuting Authority. It is our responsibility to prosecute and obtain justice for all. We hope that this sentence will deter similar individuals, and we applaud the prosecutor and police for their efforts,” concluded Ramkisson-Kara.
