Most of the country is currently experiencing an early summer of heavy rainfall, resulting in dams overflowing.
As part of dam safety measures, the Department of Water and Sanitation recently had to water in some of the dams with the opening of sluice gates.
According to Marcus Monyakeni, communications specialist, this is a warning to communities living near and around dams, as well as those in low-lying areas, to be cautious when water is released.
“Heavy inflows often result in flash floods downstream and in low-lying areas. Communities are also encouraged to avoid bridges and areas with a high flow of water,” he said.
He further stated that motorists are also advised not to attempt to cross high-volume flooding water or bridges that are flooded.
“Traditional healers and church members who visit rivers, streams, and other waterways for spiritual purposes must also exercise caution by ensuring that the water flow and levels do not endanger the lives of any of their congregants,” Monyakeni concluded.
