Road safety ahead of the Christmas period got a boost on Friday when the Newcastle Municipality officially launched its Festive Road Safety Campaign at the Hilldrop and Allen Street intersection.
The campaign was organised by the Newcastle Municipality’s Department of Community Safety in collaboration with the SANTACO Taxi Association Amajuba Regional Council, EMRS, the Department of Health and the Amajuba Driving School Association.
According to the municipality’s communications department, the main goal of this programme was to ensure that the community, particularly motorists, are in compliance with all road regulations.
This is to ensure Newcastle remains extra safe during the festive season, especially since thousands of people will be flooding to the District to participate in the long-awaited SALGA KZNDSAC GAMES 2022, which will be held in the District from December 8-11.
Newcastle Mayor, Cllr. DX Dube, Speaker of Council, Cllr TM Zulu, Deputy Mayor, Cllr SM Thwala, Municipal Manager, Z Mcineka, Municipal Councillors and officials were present to officially launch the campaign.
Newcastle Mayor Cllr. DX Dube, emphasised the importance of safe commuting and pleaded with SANTACO to assist in combating the festive season pandemic of speeding on the roads in an effort to reduce accidents.
Dube also urged SANTACO to work with the municipality by advising taxi drivers and taxi owners to ensure that all of their taxis are roadworthy when transporting people and that taxi drivers adhere to the speed limit to ensure commuter safety.
The Mayor urged the health and traffic departments to work together to maximise their availability on the roads during the holiday season. He expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders involved in ensuring that Newcastle’s image and identity as a town that promotes the safety of its residents and visitors is well preserved.
Cllr SM Thwala, Deputy Mayor of Newcastle, has requested that traffic officers be deployed in areas around Newcastle to regulate traffic during the holiday season. He also suggested that driving schools send out well-trained instructors who are equipped with the necessary skills to mentor and effectively carry out driving lessons with learners.
Thwala praised the Amajuba District for its low rate of road accidents and expressed satisfaction with the increase in the number of dedicated traffic officers and their visibility on the roads.
The delegation then proceeded to the road to distribute paraphernalia and road safety messages to motorists.
“The municipality will constantly monitor the compliance of taxi operators and other vehicles ferrying passengers through its traffic policing unit.”
Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube, also extended a warm welcome to the various Districts that will be participating in the SALGA KZNDSAC Games.
