Two minibus taxis crashed on the P483 on Wednesday afternoon, between Newcastle and Madadeni, resulting in one fatality and more than 20 injuries.

According to Jan-Henk van Vuuren of Magenta Medical Services, when emergency services arrived on the site, one person had already succumbed to his injuries and was proclaimed dead on the scene.

“More than 20 others sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. Three of the passengers were trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life,” said Van Vuuren.

The exact cause of the collision is still unclear. A police investigation is continuing.
