Residents warned to brace themselves as more thundershowers are expected later today
The Newcastle Community Policing Forum has confirmed in a statement that a flood watch has been initiated for the Newcastle and surrounding areas.
The South African Weather Services has issued another warning to KwaZulu-Natal as more thundershowers are expected later this afternoon.
The SAWS issued a Yellow Level 2 warning, meaning scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over most parts of KZN today.
Conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that may result in minor impacts over the Midlands and the Western parts of KZN in the afternoon into the evening.
These storms are expected to be accompanied by damaging winds and heavy downpours.
The impacts of this could include:
• Localised flooding of settlements, low-lying roads and bridges
• Localised damage to infrastructure
• Severe lightning can possibly result in localised fire incidents and injuries to humans and livestock
• Difficult driving conditions leading to vehicle accidents
The Newcastle Community Policing Forum has confirmed that a flood watch has been initiated for the Newcastle and surrounding areas.
The Newcastle CPF, SAPS, Protection Services, Private Security and Disaster Management are actively monitoring the situation and actively assisting those in need.
“Report flooding to SAPS or Protection Services or alert the CPF member on duty. We will try our best to attend to you in emergency situations,” read a CPF statement.
Residents are also urged to stay home unless travel is completely necessary.
“Don’t come out to see any flooded areas, as you may also be caught up in the flood. Keep the roads clear for emergency services and avoid any areas with rushing water,” the CPF warned.
