Over 200 matriculants benefit from Mayoral Registrations Fund
Mayor Xolani Dube has also committed to visiting the institutions of higher learning where the majority of the students are enrolled on a regular basis to monitor the students' progress.
The Newcastle Municipality Mayoral registration fund has given students from across the town renewed hope for a better future.
According to the municipality, over 200 of Newcastle’s top students from all 34 municipal wards were given hope in the form of an envelope, which will allow them to pursue their dreams of attending universities and colleges.
The Mayoral Bursary Scheme is an annual program that covers tertiary registration fees for students from low-income families who want to pursue higher education.
The mayor was accompanied by the Speaker of Council, Cllr. Thengamehlo Zulu, and the Manager in the Deputy Mayor’s Office, Ms Zanele Thwala.
The mayor presented the 200 students with registration bursaries to any registered institution of higher learning of their choice, as well as an appreciation certificate recognizing the students’ achievement of receiving good results.
Cllr. Xolani Dube, the mayor, also offered words of encouragement to the deserving recipients, who are hoping to kickstart their academic careers.
“I encourage and urge you all to go out to your respective universities and colleges to represent Newcastle, and most importantly, to put Newcastle on the map for all the right reasons. You will face difficulties and setbacks along the way, but I implore you not to give up. Your path to a successful academic future begins today, and your results show that you will all do well. We have invested in your education as the Newcastle Municipality, and I am confident that each of you will do us proud. The people of Newcastle have entrusted us with a mandate that includes not only providing basic services, but also ensuring that we look after our municipality’s youth,” remarked Mayor, Xolani Dube.

The day ended on a high note when a local businessman, Mr Hans from AML, presented two top achievers with vouchers.
Hans also sent a message of encouragement to the students, commending them on their hard work and outstanding results for the 2022 academic year.
He encouraged the students to keep fighting for a better future by studying extra hard.
