TSSA emerges victorious in Ward 31

Results show TSSA winning with 50, 42% votes with the ANC the runner up with 33, 57%.

The gamble of the IFP withdrawing from the by-election and putting their full support behind TSSA proved successful even though results show 247 still voted for the IFP.

Nozipho Zikalala, secretary general of the TSSA Youth, explained that there were some challenges as there was  confusion among some  IFP members who showed up to vote for the IFP.

She said that getting funding for campaigning was a challenge as TSSA is a new party.

When asked about TSSA giving residents of Ward 31 fridges and microwaves during the campaigning, she said: “We went to the community and asked what they needed … We gave it to them because it was what they want and needed at that time.”

EFF’s spokesperson, Manqoba Dhlamini, said that they campaigned well and will welcome any outcome from the by elections. He further questioned the fairness of the campaign, saying that  “the playing field is not level. We have seen others giving ‘gifts’. There must be mechanisms in place to curb such campaign tactics.”

TSSA has promised to work diligently for the ward with Zikalala saying:

“We are mainly looking at fixing the roads, the toilets and housing, which we have started doing as a party. The youth of Ward 31 want jobs. We are looking at bringing business people to create jobs for the youth.”
