Human Rights Day, observed every year on March 21, is a national commemoration and proclamation of the rights we have in our country.
This historic day serves as a reminder of the cost that was paid for the human rights that we now enjoy.
Health is a fundamental human right.
Thousands of South Africans receive life-saving blood transfusions each year thanks to the selfless acts of our donors. A right that we all have as a result of our constitution’s comprehensive South African Bill of Rights.
For more than two decades, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has been driven by its mission to save lives and ensure that every citizen has access to blood transfusions when needed.
This cannot be accomplished without the invaluable assistance of generous donors.
This year, SANBS is not only encouraging healthy members of the public to visit their nearest donor center to participate in Human Rights Day activities, but it is also asking each of them to bring one.
SANBS believes that there is power in numbers, as demonstrated by the powerful movement that gave rise to Human Rights Day.
We observe Human Rights Day to emphasise our commitment to equal access to healthcare services – which is one of our constitutional human rights. Inspired by this year’s theme, #LeaveNoOneBehind, we encourage South Africans to bring someone with them to their Human Rights Day donation this weekend,” Thandi Mosupye, SANBS Senior Manager: Marketing Communication and Branding, said.

To donate blood, you must be between the ages of 16 and 75 and weigh more than 50kg.
