Mayor calls for residents to remain calm amid threats of the national shutdown
In addition, the mayor wishes to reassure residents that any criminal elements will be dealt with decisively by law enforcement authorities.
Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube, has reassured residents that law enforcement agencies will be on high alert in the face of growing fears of the national shutdown today, March 20.
In a statement released on March 17, Mayor Dube urged residents to ‘stay away from any attempt to harm the town, its businesses, or incite civil unrest.’

He added that he is pleased with the ‘high level of preparedness planning by law enforcement agencies, particularly the SA National Defence Force’s (SANDF) strategic patrol plans.’
“We assure residents that law enforcement authorities will deal decisively with any (criminality).”
Mayor Dube called for ‘patriotic, peace-loving Newcastle residents to speak out against those attempting to destroy our beloved town and to discourage any attempts to instill anarchy in our town.’
Local businesses should be on high alert and report any form of disruption to law enforcement. Members of the community are also encouraged to collaborate with businesses in their respective areas in order to avoid any type of disruption.
“While peaceful demonstrations are allowed in our democratic dispensation, these should be conducted in a legal, responsible and orderly manner. I call upon Newcastle residents to not participate in such transgressions, to display unity, peace and let us continue to grow our local economy.” remarked Cllr Dube
“It will be business as usual in Newcastle and the functioning of the municipality and the provision of services will continue as normal. We want to inform all that regime change through unconstitutional means will not happen in our Newcastle”
The safety of residents, property, and infrastructure remains the government’s top priority, so Newcastle Municipality’s Protection Services will be on high alert and will collaborate with all SAPS and SANDF units stationed in Newcastle.
