UPDATE: MEC commits to most NSNP services in KZN being restored by the end of today
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Education MEC, Mbali Frazer has assured the DA that the vast majority of schools in the province will have food by the end of today:
Dr Imran Keeka, MPL – DA KZN spokesperson on education, says that he has has received assurances from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Education MEC, Mbali Frazer, that the vast majority of schools in the province will have food by the end of today.
This comes as hundreds of thousands of KZN pupils continue to go hungry.

The assurance comes with the possible exception of Ugu, where the National Schools Nutrition Programme (NSNP) is expected to be restored by the end of business tomorrow.
The Ulundi area could also say a delay in service because of ‘possible political interference.’
“The information comes after a phone conversation yesterday with the MEC and earlier communication with her requesting a public statement rather than allowing speculation and assumptions,” he said.
He stated that MEC Frazer had also cited illegal business as a source of tension and delivery delays. This, on top of what she confirmed was a logistics issue involving the NSNP’s new bulk supplier of food for learners.
“At the moment, the DA sees no reason to reject the MEC’s commitment to resolving system failures within her department. We will continue to carry out our oversight duties as rigorously as possible within the confines of the law.
“The NSNP breakdown should never have happened in the first place. Finally, it reflects the department’s failure to properly plan, execute, evaluate, and communicate effectively. It remains to be seen whether this crisis will be resolved by the time the MEC has committed to. South Africans as a whole deserve better,” Dr Keeka concluded.
