Help Newcastle’s Gerrie Hugo fight his battle against Stage 4 Cancer
After being diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma Cancer, Gerrie Hugo (47) of Newcastle is turning to the community for help.
Melanoma is considered the most serious type of skin cancer and develops in the cells (melanocytes) that produce melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour. Melanoma occurs when the pigment-producing cells become cancerous.
He was initially diagnosed in October 2021, but in March 2022, he was informed that he now had stage 4 melanoma after it was discovered that there were new lymph nodes in his upper shoulder, which were confirmed to be cancerous following a PET scan, which required yet another operation in May that same year.
I was placed on medication for six months, which I had to get ex-gracia approval for as my medical aid had been exhausted by this time. I was sent for another PET scan in April this year which confirmed that new cancer cells have formed in my back, under my right arm shoulder and in my chest,” he explained.
Gerrie’s family is now pleading with the community to help in any way possible, simply to alleviate the family’s financial burdens that come with fighting his battle.
