Newcastle Municipality responds to shooting allegations made against mayor’s bodyguards
"Allegations levelled against the mayor of Newcastle’s bodyguards are still under investigation!"
This was the statement released by the Newcastle Municipality’s communications department following allegations that the mayor’s bodyguards shot and injured two people during this week’s Charlestown protests.
It further stated that the Newcastle Municipality noted with dismay the misleading and unfounded allegations with respect to the unprotected public protest that was held in Charlestown this week.
“The municipality would like to place on record that it is aware of an altercation that transpired during the protest action, during which several persons, including the mayor, sustained multiple injuries.
As a law-abiding citizen and leader of the community who cares about the safety of the people of Newcastle, Mayor Cllr. Xolani Dube has instructed his protection team to participate with law enforcement authorities to fast-track their investigation and to establish what transpired during this altercation.
Mayor Dube is determined to find those responsible for the incident and will ensure that they face the full might of the law.
Mayor Dube has expressed his disappointment towards those individuals who seek to destabilize the daily functions of our communities to further their political agenda.
In the interim, the Newcastle Municipality pleads with media houses to allow the SAPS, as the authorized investigation body of the state, to fully investigate the matter freely and with due diligence.
The municipality will thereafter provide feedback as soon as the outcomes of the investigation from the SAPS are finalized, as pre-emptive comments could jeopardize the investigation.”
