Dedicated milestone donors receive the VIP treatment at donor awards evening

Unselfish and dedicated blood donors were celebrated for their continued commitment to saving lives at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) Blood Donor Awards evening at the Blackrock Casio on Friday night.

Shavani Sewpaul, Donor Relations Practitioner, who was also the programme director thanked the donors and asked them to encourage their friends and relatives to also come forward.

SANBS zone manager, Phelelani Mkhize, was the keynote speaker and emphasised the importance of regular blood donations.

Guest speaker, Sonja Timm, related the emotional story of how selfless blood donors ultimately saved her son’s life when he was just a baby and had to undergo a life-threatening surgery which required an urgent blood transfusion.

This was followed by the much-anticipated donor awards ceremony, which recognised the 50th, 75th, 100th, 125th, 175th and 200th milestone donors.

Emilian Alves received a special round of applause after it was noted that he had recently made his 400th donation.

The evening concluded with a deliciously prepared three-course buffet and light banter between all in attendance.
