Fire team conducts drill at Theku Mall to improve emergency readiness

Fire and Disaster Management helps Theku Mall staff practise safe evacuation during June 12 fire drill.

Knowing how to respond effectively during disaster situations is essential—especially in workplaces where fire emergencies can occur at any time.

It was with this in mind that the Newcastle Municipality’s Fire and Disaster Management team, in partnership with Theku Mall staff, conducted a fire drill on June 12.

The exercise focused on practising safe and efficient evacuation procedures in the event of a fire.

Fire drills are a crucial part of emergency preparedness and help individuals respond quickly and calmly when real-life emergencies occur.

These exercises were to:

  • Familiarise staff and customers with emergency escape routes, assembly points, and fire safety protocols.
  • Ensure individuals know how to react in high-stress situations, reducing confusion and panic.
  • Test the efficiency of alarms, evacuation plans, and overall emergency procedures.
  • Reinforce best practices and highlight areas that may need improvement.
