The hero was Mr Bheki, who spotted the little nose sticking out from beneath a heavy cement drain cover and immediately contacted the SPCA’s emergency number.

“We immediately responded and again requested assistance from our fire department to help lift the heavy cover,” said Jen Tinkler of the Newcastle SPCA. “As always, they arrived in a flash, ready to help.”

Concerned residents who had also heard the dog barking at night had rushed to the scene – some even bringing her ‘lekker braai vleis’ to bring her comfort.

With the help of incredible camaraderie and genuine compassion, the dog was brought to safety, hungry and thirsty, but miraculously unharmed.

“Thank you to Mr Bheki, for saving her life,” Tinkler said.

Tinkler concluded by saying it was the dangers of missing drain covers that caused this kind of unnecessary suffering, as there could be so many other animals that were not so fortunate to survive.
