Chaos erupts as Mondlo residents torch municipal offices

Mondlo residents protest poor service delivery, torching municipal offices amid electricity and water frustrations.

Mondlo residents took to the streets in the early hours of Wednesday morning last week, bringing the township to a standstill in protest after the implementation of load-reduction.
All entrances and exits to Mondlo were blocked, tyres were set alight, and chaos unfolded throughout the morning.
Frustrated community members said they have lost patience with AbaQulusi Local Municipality, accusing the municipality of neglect and poor service delivery. Some residents even called for Mondlo to become an independent township.

The protesters said they are frequently left without electricity and water, often without prior notice. Anger boiled over when the municipal offices in Mondlo were set alight. Moments later, residents commandeered a TLB machine, drove it near the burning building, and set it on fire as well.
